School Improvement Update

Strategic School Waiver System (SWSS) Implementation

After review and discussion by the Cabinet, the following innovations will be considered for implementation in SY2017-2018:

 

  1. Extending ELA and Math instruction for K-2 with integration of Science and Social Studies

  2. Scheduling flexibility relative to instructional time for core and non-core subjects (e.g., Zero Periods, Reallocating instructional minutes, etc.)

 

Next steps include the Assistant Superintendents scheduling a meeting with principals interested in K-2 interdisciplinary instruction for ELA and Math. Of course, principals currently have discretion to reallocate minutes as they develop their local schedules.

 

Enrollment Balancing

Schools and households impacted have been notified. Impacted schools should plan to meet and welcome incoming students with such events to occur prior to the last day of school.  All information on this process is available on the District’s website.

 

Mid-Year Data Meetings

Mid-year district-wide data summaries have been shared via email when appropriate. All schools are participating in MOY data meetings. The focus should be to dig deep to determine successes, challenges, and strategies to mitigate regression and to accelerate progress. The action of aligning and targeting increased learning time (e.g., before-during-afterschool tutorials, Saturday School, etc.) will be critical to students below or well below benchmark.

 

Mid-Year Collaboration Meetings with Select Principals

The Superintendent, Chief School Improvement Officer, Chief Academic Officer, and Assistant Superintendents are meeting with principals of schools whose CCRPI scores decreased from 2015 to 2016 if those scores are in the D/F category. The meetings provide the Principal and two members of the school’s leadership team an opportunity to share what specific actions have been taken to improve the achievement outcomes. The discussions focus on instruction, data, interventions, culture and climate, accountability, and support needed.

 

Preparing for GMAS

In addition to ensuring students master the content standards, continue to ensure students are provided many opportunities to solve problems. Problem solving should occur routinely across all content areas and within all classrooms.
